EROSION WATCH

Lakehead Conservation is keeping a close eye on the Kam River bank near Victor St. and Broadway Ave. A monitoring system allows staff to detect small changes in slope that may signal an imminent slope failure. Further action can then be taken.

Several pipes have been drilled vertically into the ground both down from and back from the crest of the bank. Cables in the pipes are used to measure any horizontal movement of the ground. The system was recommended in last year's Kam River Bank Stability Assessment.

The slope in the area has eroded to within six metres of the Victor St. and could threaten the road and municipal services. The Assessment put forth options for controlling the erosion. Funding is being sought and it is hoped that the situation will be addressed in the near future.
