The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) is a community-based environmental agency, responsible for the delivery of programs and services that further the conservation, restoration, development and management of natural resources in the Lakehead Watershed.
DID YOU KNOW? River Otters are fur real winter champions. Their fur is incredibly dense - ranging from 58,000 to 400,000 hairs per square inch! For comparison, humans have only about 1,250 hairs per square inch on our heads 😲
That thick and oily coat isn’t just for staying cozy, it also makes otters pros at belly-sliding through the snow ❄️. Not only is it an efficient way to travel downhill while saving energy, but it looks like a total blast!
So keep an eye out along your local rivers for slide marks and snowy shenanigans. If you spot them… you know you’ve found an otterly great time 😄🦦! Now you know!
The LRCA is feeling extra festive, and this holiday season we want to give a little something back to our amazing community! One lucky winner will receive a holiday prize pack valued at $100, including a 2026 LRCA Explore Pass🎁

Who doesn’t love skipping stones across a fresh sheet of ice?
DID YOU KNOW the “pew-pew” sound it makes is caused by a phenomenon called acoustic dispersion? It’s actually the same effect used to create the iconic laser-blast sounds in the Star Wars movies! 🎬✨
When a stone hits the ice, it sends out a wide range of sound waves. The high-frequency waves reach your ears first, followed by the lower ones—creating that cool sci-fi sound! Now you know!
