MILLS BLOCK FOREST
and Williams Forest
The LRCA owns two forest management properties that afford flood protection and provide wildlife habitat. Periodic harvest of wood products and regeneration are part of the management plan for the properties. Mills Block Forest (pictured at right) offers a 4 km hiking trail. Walk across an active beaver dam and watch for wildlife in the rich mixed forest.

Sound Forest Management

Lakehead Conservation undertook various forest management activities in 1998. At the beginning of the year, small harvest blocks were cut in the Williams Forest and Mills Block Forest. Some of the blocks were replanted with red pine and white spruce seedlings, while the rest will be allowed to regenerate naturally.

Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. is managing forest resources on the two land parcels in conjunction with Lakehead Conservation.

Mills Block - beaver pond
Wildlife viewing is excellent at Mills Block Forest. A hiking trail passes by an active beaver pond.
Left: Regeneration of harvest blocks included planting 6,000 seedlings. Right: Specialized logging equipment minimized site disturbance while working in the Mills Block Forest.
Directions: Mills Block Forest is located on John Street Road at the corner of Community Hall Road, just ten minutes west of Highway 11/17.
Williams Agreement Forest is located in Oliver Township and is largely inaccessible.
