ICE ISN'T NICE

Members of the Snowmobile Policing Advisory Committee presented a demonstration water rescue of Thunder Bay Firefighter - snowmobiler Dennis Brescasin, Friday after a staged fall through the ice in Thunder Bay Harbour. Brescasin demonstrated the proper way to get out of the water by using ice picks, which should be carried by every sledder.

Firefighter Rod Hurdon demonstrated a second rescue of Brescasin with the aid of other firefighters. The exercise was meant to heighten awareness of the risks of snowmobiling on spring ice.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has called ice conditions on local waterways "very dangerous."
