WATERSHED REPORTS
excerpted from 2000 LRCA Annual ReportOriginally posted: Jan. 26, 2001

Lakehead Conservation continued its series of assessments of watersheds within our jurisdiction. Four small watersheds at the west end of Shuniah Township were studied this year. All of the creeks start in the hills north of Highway 11-17 and travels south to Lake Superior.

As with other similar Studies, Conservation staff undertook water quality testing and benthic sampling of the aquatic life. Staff collected information on land use, zoning, erosion sites and stream crossings to use on computerized watershed maps. The reports serve as baseline data that can be compared in the future to detect any changes in watershed characteristics.

The watercourses are in fairly good shape. Residential development is primarily near Lakeshore Drive. Hydro lines, the Canadian National and the Canadian Pacific Railways cross the watersheds. Some commercial and industrial development is also present.

Above: The banks of the creeks investigated in our watershed planning exercise had good tree cover. The 'KOA' Creek, pictured here near Lakeshore Drive, was the largest of the four watersheds.
