CONSERVATION AREA NEWS - 2001
excerpted from 2001 LRCA Annual ReportOriginally posted: Jan. 11, 2002

DID YOU KNOW that annually over 60,000 people visit Conservation Areas operated by Lakehead Conservation.

Traffic counters were used at Hazelwood Lake and Cascades CA to record visitor numbers. Data at other sites in the future will help us to manage our areas.

One clear fact is that only a fraction of the people using conservation lands deposits the $2 per vehicle fee. The revenue from the fee and other sources does not cover expenses, such as taxes, insurance and maintenance.

An Annual Pass will be available for 2003. The Pass will be a tremendous value because it will have a low price and allow unlimited access to conservation lands - a whole year of recreation in outstanding places.

Water Fun at Hazelwood Lake CA

Left: Hazelwood's sparkling waters are ideal for fishing, swimming or gazing at from the beach and trails. Paddling has become very popular. The lake's scenic shoreline makes for an enjoyable time.

Mission Island Marsh CA - New Trees & Happy Faces

Above: Several shade trees were planted along the entrance road thanks to funding by Ontario Power Generation (OPG). OPG also continued to fund one of the viewing scopes.
Left and below left: School groups did pond studies in the man-made lagoons (left). Looking at birds and plants (below left) along the boardwalk was another great learning experience. Lakehead Conservation staff will lead programs for a small fee. We have study kits for those who want to run their own trips.
