WATERSHED REPORTS
excerpted from 2001 LRCA Annual ReportOriginally posted: Jan. 11, 2002

Lakehead Conservation continued its series of inventories of watersheds within our jurisdiction. Seven small watersheds to the west of the MacKenzie River in Shuniah Township were studied this year. Most of the creeks start in the hills near Highway 11-17 and travel south to Lake Superior.>

As with other similar studies, Conservation staff undertook water quality testing and benthic sampling of the aquatic life. Staff collected information on land use, zoning, erosion sites and stream crossings to use on computerized watershed maps. The reports serve as baseline data that can be compared in the future to detect any changes in watershed characteristics.

The watercourses are in fairly good shape. Residential development is primarily near Lakeshore Drive, with some commercial and industrial development also being present. Hydro corridors, two major roadways and railway lines cross the watersheds.

Above: The creeks have good tree cover for most of their length, particularly in the upper reaches of their watersheds. The soil is generally thin and overlies bedrock. The creeks expose boulders in their beds, such as in this section of 'Grandview' Creek near Grandview Beach Road.
