Lakehead Conservation's 2002 budget expenditures totalled just over one million dollars in the following areas: administration of our flood and erosion control programs; flood forecasting and warning; plan input and review; watershed planning; operation and development of our Conservation Areas (CA) and associated lands; Hazelwood Lake Centre; and community relations. The Kam River Bank Stability Assessment examined erosion control works that were built fifteen years ago. Adjacent areas now need remedial works, which will be phased over the next few years. Along the Neebing-McIntyre Floodway, a storm sewer headwall was replaced. The addition of two streamflow gauges will enhance our ability to monitor potential flood conditions. Watershed planning exercises were carried out on ten short watercourses in the Municipality of Shuniah. Facility improvements at Conservation Areas were made possible by special funding from partner agencies. The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund assisted with bridges and trail upgrades at Cascades, along with funds from the Thunder Bay Lions Club and Fort William Rotary Club. Picnic tables were added to the pavilions at Hurkett Cove and Little Trout Bay CA's with contributions from Mink Mountain Resort, Edmond Timber, the Township of Dorion and the Municipality of Neebing. The Great Lakes Heritage Coast Project of Ontario's Living Legacy funded a second boat launch ramp at Silver Harbour CA, while the Municipality of Shuniah funded replacement of the washroom. Additional funds were provided by the North Shore Steelhead Association. The Lakehead Conservation Foundation gave a further $25,000 towards Conservation Area development. Ontario Power Generation sponsored the printing of an activity booklet and a viewing scope at Mission Island Marsh Conservation Area. The graphs and chart, at left, show our revenue and expenditures for 2002. Municipal levy and provincial transfer payment dollars are only used for watershed management projects and related administrative costs. Land management program funds must be secured from other sources. |
