EROSION WORKS REVIEWED
excerpted from 2002 LRCA Annual ReportOriginally posted: Jan. 08, 2003

An engineering study has examined erosion control works that were installed seventeen years ago. Lakehead Conservation hired a consultant to compile the Kam River Bank Stability Assessment.

In 1985, Lakehead Conservation installed major erosion control works on the Kam River near Victor St. and Broadway Ave. Riprap (stone) was used to protect the shoreline at the toe of the slope. Several homes near the slope were bought and removed. A concrete and steel retaining wall was built along one section of the top of the bank to protect the road and municipal services.

The riprap has halted shoreline erosion and the banks have flattened to a stable angle. Vegetation has grown up and is helping to hold the soil. The retaining wall is in good condition.

However, downstream of the wall are five sites where the slope has eroded to within 6 metres of the road. Three control options were proposed and will be further refined in 2003. Monitors will be installed at the five locations.

Addressing erosion issues helps protect life and property. The sediment from erosion can impact water quality, decrease the depth of river channels and worsen the potential for flooding.

Above: Bank erosion is still occurring downstream of the original project area. Remedial works will need to be undertaken.
