USING OUR FORESTS WISELY
excerpted from 1997 LRCA Annual ReportOriginally posted: Jan. 1998

The Conservation Authority has formed a partnership with Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. to manage forest resources on two land parcels. Commencing in the winter of 1997-98 and for roughly every two years thereafter, small harvests will occur. The work will provide a source of timber, promote regeneration and demonstrate good forest management.

Mills Block Forest is a 292 hectare parcel south of John Street Road at Community Hall Road in Thunder Bay. The Williams Forest is comprised of several blocks in Oliver Township. Both areas were acquired back in the 1950's with the intention of having periodic harvests.

Abitibi-Consolidated will undertake selective harvest in the winter months with special forwarding machines. The equipment will mean minimal disturbance to the ground cover and cut areas will be small.
