PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - 1998
Our annual Dinner and Auction is our largest fund-raising event and it just keeps getting bigger and better. The 1998 version raised over $22,000 for Cascades Conservation Area. A capacity crowd was in attendance to enjoy good food, take a chance in the draws and bid on auction items. I wish to thank our volunteers for their hard work and businesses, organizations and individuals for their generous contributions.
In May, I had the pleasure of presenting a cheque to the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority for $30,000. This represented our first instalment toward our $130,000 campaign for visitor facility improvements at the Cascades Conservation Area. The money was raised through the Dinner & Auction and other fund-raising activities, including Nevada ticket sales, coin boxes, memberships and donations. The campaign will run for another few years.
Nearly 300 more trees were added to the Blake Memorial Grove, bringing the total number of trees planted to more than 2,200. The Grove consists of maple, spruce, flowering crab, willow, lilac and other species lining the Floodway pathways from the Harbour upstream to Fort William Road. Blake Funeral Chapel donates one tree in memory of each person they serve. Several private donations are also made to the Memorial Grove each year. The annual dedication service at the end of June is normally attended by 500 family members and friends.
Please join in on our work by becoming a 'Friend of the Foundation', giving towards the Cascades campaign, or making a Memorial Grove donation.
