Mission Island Marsh
Rowing Regatta at Hazelwood Lake

Left: Over 200 competitors from Canada and the mid-west U.S. took part in a three-day meet, which was hosted by the Thunder Bay Rowing Club.
Right: Racers started at the west side of the lake and powered their sculls (boats) to exciting finishes in front of the Hazelwood Lake Centre.


Improved Handicap Access At Mission Island Marsh C.A.

Left: New railings will make it easier for people with special needs to reach the top of the vieiwng mound and see the marsh at Mission Island Marsh C.A.
Right: The section of trail from the parking lot to the washroom and interpretive pavilion was paved. A corporate donation of $10,000 was used to achieve various projects at Mission Marsh.


Trail Maps at Mission Marsh

Left: Colourful maps show the trails, boardwalk and other features of this popular area. A large map at the parking lot was provided through a corporate donation, while the Thunder Bay Hiking Association funded a smaller map at the Interpretive Pavilion.


Students Help the Birds

Left: Two classes at Claude Garton School built nest boxes and placed them at Mission Island Marsh C.A. Tree swallows came to inspect even before the children has finished putting in all the posts.
Right: Of the 24 boxes, 30% were used by families of tree swallows and chickadees.


Learning About Wetlands

Left: Some students from St. Bernard School were among the many schools and groups that used Conservation Areas for outdoor field studies. Here, they look for pond life at the lagoons in Mission Marsh.


Community Birdfeeders

Left: Help feed the birds at Mission Marsh. Two permanent feeders have been placed near the parking lot. Bring along some sunflower seeds next time you visit and enjoy watching our feathered friends.
