Silver Harbour Transaction
After two years in process,
Lakehead Conservation completed a land sale transaction for a portion of
Silver Harbour Conservation Area. The adjoining property owner had approached
Lakehead Conservation with a proposal to sever a strip along the north side
of the Conservation Area. The proponent would use the severed parcel to
build a road to his land-locked property.
The parcel represents
a small fraction of Silver Harbour Conservation Area and does not include
any of the recreation facilities or shoreline lands. An easement along
the new road would allow Lakehead Conservation to establish a trail and
provide public access to the one-half of the Conservation Area that lies
beyond the old quarry face.
Lakehead Conservation's
Board agreed to the sale and the severance was subsequently approved by
Shuniah Municipal Council. Approval was also sought and received from
the Minister of Natural Resources to dispose of this parcel of Authority-owned
land as per regulations.
Three nearby property
owners appealed the severance to the Ontario Municipal Board. In the end,
the OMB permitted the severance. The final sale should be completed in
early 2000.
