Relax at Cedar Falls

Bench overlooks Cedar Falls Left: Enjoy the soothing sounds of falling water at Cedar Falls Conservation Area. Two benches were added in 1999 so that visitors can take it easy. Cedar Falls is in O'Connor Twp. at the east end of Broome Rd. (off Hwy. 590, south on Garbutt Rd.)

More and More Trees

GAP staff plant trees at Mission Marsh Arbour Week taught local children about the value of trees and forests. A total of 25,000 tree seedlings were distributed to students and landowners through the generous contribution from TransCanada Pipelines. Staff from the local GAP store (left) planted seedlings at Mission Island Marsh Conservation Area, as did classes from Holy Cross School.

Terrific Nature Craft Fair

Nature Craft Fair at Hazelwood Left: A large crowd came out to our third annual Nature Craft Fair at the Hazelwood Lake Centre. There were more crafters than ever and a wide assortment of items to see. Products ranged from willow furniture, wildlife art and quilts to pottery, woodcrafts and preserves.

Silver Harbour Transaction

After two years in process, Lakehead Conservation completed a land sale transaction for a portion of Silver Harbour Conservation Area. The adjoining property owner had approached Lakehead Conservation with a proposal to sever a strip along the north side of the Conservation Area. The proponent would use the severed parcel to build a road to his land-locked property.

The parcel represents a small fraction of Silver Harbour Conservation Area and does not include any of the recreation facilities or shoreline lands. An easement along the new road would allow Lakehead Conservation to establish a trail and provide public access to the one-half of the Conservation Area that lies beyond the old quarry face.

Lakehead Conservation's Board agreed to the sale and the severance was subsequently approved by Shuniah Municipal Council. Approval was also sought and received from the Minister of Natural Resources to dispose of this parcel of Authority-owned land as per regulations.

Three nearby property owners appealed the severance to the Ontario Municipal Board. In the end, the OMB permitted the severance. The final sale should be completed in early 2000.

Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program

Left: Lakehead Conservation has applied for the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program on nine of our land holdings. A professional forestry consultant conducted inventories and developed a plan for each property. The cost to develop the plans will be offset by savings on property taxes over the first five years. As a property owner of 2500 hectares of land, Lakehead Conservation pays a significant amount of taxes annually.

Hike-a-thon Benefits Cascades Improvements

Cascades Hike-a-thon Fundraiser Left: Autumn Hike-a-thon helped to raise funds for our Cascades project, such as the picnic pavilion. Jiska Westbroek won these prizes for collecting the second highest pledge total.
