WATERSHED REPORTS - 1999

Wild Goose Creek
Wild Goose Creek (shown at Mrakic Rd.), has a mix of quiet spots and steeper sections.

Wild Goose Creek and the neighbouring watercourse of Blind Creek were part of Lakehead Conservation's most recent watershed planning exercises. The Creeks start in the hills north of Highway 11-17 and travel south to Lake Superior within the Municipality of Shuniah.

As with our other similar Studies, Conservation staff undertook water quality testing and benthic sampling of the aquatic life. Staff collected information on land use, zoning, erosion sites and stream crossings to use on computerized watershed maps. The reports serve as baseline data that can be compared in the future to detect any changes in watershed characteristics.

The watercourses are in good shape and show little human impact. Residential development is primarily near Lakeshore Drive. Portions of the upper reaches are under forest management. Staff would like to thank Mr. Mrakic for allowing access to his forest lands.

Continued monitoring was performed on Pennock and Corbett Creeks as a follow-up to previous years' Reports.
